Is There A Health Benefit To Consuming Wheatgrass?

My brother is really into natural foods. He spends a lot of time growing herbs and using them for a variety of ailments and buys a lot of food and food ingredients in a natural food store.

And he's a vegetarian. And while I'm a proponent of eating healthy and using more natural resources to improve my health, I still enjoy a steak or cheeseburger, too. In moderation!

My Brother and Wheatgrass

The other day I was over at my brother's house and he wanted to know if I'd ever had wheatgrass. No, I told him, I hadn't. Well, he was just mixing up some wheatgrass juice and wanted me to try it. I was thinking more along the lines of a Miller Lite. But, not surprisingly, my brother didn't hasve any beer, so I decided, what the heck, I'm game. He poured me a small glass of wheatgrace juice. It was awful. A little sweet, but not very appetizing. I said it tastes like grass. He said, "it Is! Why do you think cows always look so content? They feel great because they eat grass all day." I said, "How do you know cows feel great? Did one of them tell you that? Besides, those are all dairy cows. All they do is sit around all day and eat and rest." He laughed and said that wheatgrass, especially when it's fresh and green, is full of chlorophyll, which is one of the healthiest things you can eat. It's a cure-all for what ails you." I couldn't help thinking of one of that Old West medicine man who traveled from town to town selling his Mighty Elixir.

I’m not really sure what the actual benefits of wheatgrass are, but itsure tastes awful. But I took another sip. It tasted so bad that it just has to be really good for you.  Whatever the benefits of wheatgrass are, I don’t think I could drink that stuff everyday but lately I’m trying to.  I’ve been on a sort of mission to determine what the plant does.

I Started To Feel Good

I have to admit, drinking a shot of wheatgrass does kind of make me feel really good.  That is after I’m done hacking, wheezing, and trying not to vomit all over the place.  My brother is always drinking the stuff, and it seems like whenever I go out to lunch with him he convinces me to try it again.  There must be some benefits of wheatgrass consumption, because since he’s started on it he’s lost weight, gotten two promotions, met the woman of his dreams and proposed to her, and recently won a new car in a random contest he entered.

The Jury's Still Out On Wheatgrass

I was talking to my doctor about the benefits of wheatgrass a little while back, and he actually looked at me and said ‘I’m not really sure’.  It’s probably the only time I’ve ever heard a doctor say that, so it left an impression on me.  Anyway, he of course went on into some lecture about vitamins and antioxidants, which he suspected were in wheatgrass, and how all that stuff can help you avoid things like cancer and generally live longer.  None of what he said was really all that interesting to me; I wanted women and cars and more money.  While my doctor is convinced that my brother’s good fortune of late has nothing to do with the wheatgrass, I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about.  The connection is obvious.

It’s pretty awful stuff, but I’m trying to drink it more often these days to find out for myself what the benefits of wheatgrass may be.  So far I haven’t had much luck.  Actually, since I started drinking it more regularly in the last two weeks I’ve been hit by a car, my girlfriend left me, my computer died, and I’ve gotten two parking tickets.  But I do feel better physically! I'll report back to you on my progress.

That post was hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The title caught my attention because I also have been hearing about the beneficial qualities of consuming wheat grass, but, like you I feared the taste of it so up to now have not tried it.

I was sort of hoping that by reading this post I would have been encouraged to go for it and in some ways I am, but in others I am still hesitant.

I guess if I had a brother who constantly offered it to me I would be more likely to give it a shot, rather than going out and buying it for myself.

    Anyway, thanks for the laughs.

    Take care,
    Chris
